This manual provides you with land navigation technical expertise and best practices learned through years of experience. Our approach for The Project is always realistic and delivered to you in the context of the “typical” American dad, mom, daughter, or son. This is written in a straightforward, no fluff manner. We focus on the realistic navigation skills that will apply to conditions you are likely to encounter. This is a practical, high odds use case manual for the normal human. We built this for you to use as a foundation reference, it is detailed and straightforward.  

Some elements you may have been taught in large format land nav classes are not in here. This is not a comprehensive manual by any means, there are hundreds of additional pages that can be written about land navigation. This manual is laser focused on the foundational land nav skills you need in the real world.

The skills in this manual nest with the other books in the Professional Citizen series. You will find land nav info in the other CM’s; some of that will be reiterated in here out of necessity. We must include portions of that content from the previous books to allow this manual to stand on its own. This is a holistic, thorough primary reference you can use to learn and teach others.

Land navigation is a complex skillset, a perfect blend of art and science. Start with basic map reading: locate a point on a map by grid, identify terrain features on a map, and navigate by dead reckoning during both day and night. Enhance these skills by diving into terrain association, terrain analysis, detailed route planning, intersection, resection, and other land nav skills. Land navigation takes practical application to build proficiency. You will not learn it by only reading this manual; it takes a lot of time in the field. But this manual is the place to start.
