The TPC Gear Land Navigation base package contains a Rite in the Rain notebook, a mechanical .9 pencil, and a MapTools UTM Pocket UTM. Add these to your compass, map, and pace beads and you are all set (recommend carrying a backup pencil as well).
UTM Scale
A pocket sized tool with slot scales for 1:24,000, 1:25,000, and 1:50,000 scale maps. The 1:24,000 and 1:25,000 scales allow you to divide a 1km map grid with 10m precision. The 1:50,000 scale allows you to divide a 1km map grid with 20m precision. The tool also has a compass rose along its outside edge marked in degrees. This makes plotting or measuring a bearing a snap. The small size of this tool will allow you to keep it handy in your pocket.
A band of white ink around the edge of the tool makes reading the compass rose easier and also keeps the tool from “disappearing” when you place it on the map. There is also a lanyard hole in the upper left corner.
Printed on plastic stock, the tool is about the thickness of a credit card. The ink is coated to protect it from abrasion.
Rite in the Rain 3x5 notebook

Mechanical Pencil (Brands will vary, no choice)
We have found that the .7 and .9 mm mechanical pencil leads work best for our purposes. The 0.9 mm, HB (#2.5), Black Lead in these is great for map work and general writing tasks int he field. Just large enough that it doesnt tear or punch through, but fine enough to plot a precise point on a map or do somewhat detailed work. The Yellow Barrel is easy to spot when you drop it in the field and is durable enough to last through a few land nav courses. The one included in the package will be either Pentel or the Jedo Drafting Mechanical Pencil 0.9mm
Automatic pencil features a 4mm fixed sleeve for template work and technical drawings. Metallic-mesh grip delivers precision and control. Technical drafting pencil offers a concealed eraser and automatic lead advance. The 4mm tip length makes it ideal for use with straight edges and protractors. Pre-loaded with Hi-Polymer HB lead; never needs sharpening, is super strong and produces a clear dark line. Always carry a backup in the field, either a second mechanical or an old school number 2.
